Hello all,

This site is a great resource and tool for locals interested in opposing the power plants. Building a local community of these people is essential, but we need to know each other to make this possible. Since you have already dug into this site enough to read this, you should register and introduce yourself! Hopefully, there will be more of us than we all think. Reply to this thread and tell a bit about yourself, where you live, some interests, and one of your favorite places in White Pine County, or something along those lines. That said, allow me to be break the ice.

My name is Owen Baughman, and I've lived in Ely for the last 14 years. I'm now in Moscow, Idaho, at the University of Idaho. I enjoy wandering aimlessly in the mountains and valleys alike in Nevada, skiing, backpacking and learning all the plants of eastern Nevada (there are more than you think!). One of my favorite places in White Pine County is the south fork of Timber Creek up in that mini cirque. Very peaceful.

That's me,
Who's next?

Hello Neighbors!

I am newly moved to Ely, having spent the last three years buying land and building a home. Prior to this year, I spent 37 years living and working in Las Vegas; Ely is where I am going to retire when I can afford to stop working, and where I plan to die. I chose Ely for its pinyon-juniper woodlands, its winters, and its railroad. The woodlands are my chief concern; the proposed powerplants will ruin the environment for the trees, the sagebrush, the wild animals, our companion animals and ourselves.

The Friends' leaflet showed up in my P. O. Box, but I found it too late to attend the early March meetings it announced. There is nothing posted on this site about another meeting or about the results of this group's appearance at the 3 March/8 March meetings. What is going on now, in the middle of the month?

Hello -- I'm Mitzi. I'm a homeowner in McGill (4 years) but not yet a full-time resident. Please don't shoot me, but I have a 30-year career in California energy issues, all of it in the public interest, not-for-profit area. I've spent my career in the areas of renewable fuels and technologies, and also alternative transportation technologies and fuels.

I am absolutely amazed at how many people in the WPC area have "drunk the kool-aid" offered by the coal plant developers. I'm surprised they didn't claim the plants would cure cancer, in addition to the other promises they're making. There is absolutely nothing in this for Ely and McGill. The plant developers are snickering at us (the residents) behind our backs while purporting to be very interested in what we have to say. The promise of jobs is true only for the construction period. Once operational, only a handfull of people will be needed. Soon we'll see them "sponsoring" pools and other recreational facilities, new fire trucks and police cars, and other goodies intended to take our minds off the permanent destruction of the Steptoe Valley.

The city "leaders" can't see beyond the goodies. I guess they don't care about the legacy of pollution they're leaving for their children and grandchildren. Very shortsighted.

Hello, Mitzi!

Sorry for the belated reply. This is Jennifer Brickey, secretary for the Bristlecone Alliance. Your past experience sounds exactly like what we need to hear. If you would like to attend one of our meetings or to be enrolled in our email distribution list, feel free to send me an email at brickeyj@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Jennifer
